Inside the Vanguard: James Brandon Lewis Quartet Brings Omni Home

Front Row Jazz was in the room on Sunday, July 5th — closing night, 8:00 PM show — as the James Brandon Lewis Quartet wrapped a historic run at the Village Vanguard. The band took the stage at the legendary basement club to present music from their new album, Omni, released on Intakt Records, and the set felt every bit like the celebration it was billed to be.

Omni is the quartet's sixth album together, and it pushes further into what Lewis calls his "Molecular Systematic Music" — a compositional system that began with six- and seven-note scales, grew into a full twelve-tone approach, and here takes on what might best be described as twelve-tone gospel. Live, that idea translated into music that moved between heavy gospel roots and post-bop exploration without ever losing its center.

Each member of the quartet got room to speak in their own voice. Aruan Ortiz's piano moved from percussive clusters to spacious, hymn-like chords. Brad Jones held the low end with a rounded, woody tone that let the band breathe. Taylor's drumming was constantly in dialogue — melodic as much as rhythmic — pushing the group forward without ever crowding it. And James Brandon Lewis himself, at the center of it all, delivered the raw, testifying tenor sound that's made him one of the most talked-about voices in jazz right now, each solo landing like its own sermon.

It was pure joy — a celebration of music and a celebration of spirit, and the packed room at the Vanguard felt every bit of it. For anyone who's followed this quartet since their earliest recordings together, watching them close out a week at one of the most storied rooms in jazz with material this personal was a full-circle moment.
